  End of Season Notes June 2, 2008 Our final games of the season have been played, and now we need to be sure we're ready for next year. Please return all uniforms (shirts and socks) either to the law school's library (leave them at the Circulation Desk), or to Angie Mutter at Riverview. If you couldn't attend your final game, please speak with Angie Mutter about getting your participation medal. We look forward to seeing everyone again in the fall!

  Spring Season About To Begin! April 21, 2008 Now that cold weather is a distant memory, it's time to begin another exciting soccer season in Buchanan County! We hope to start playing games this Saturday (April 26). Please note that due to field conditions, we will start the season playing games at Keen Mountain Park. However, many coaches will still be practicing at Riverview. Uniform handout and practices will be held on Wednesday, April 23: U-6 (Pre-K to K) will meet at Riverview at 6:15 pm U-8 (1st, 2nd grades) will meet at Riverview at 6:45 pm U-10 (3rd, 4th grades) will meet at Riverview at 7:15 pm U-12 (5th, 6th grades) - to be announced U-16 (7th grade and up) will meet at Riverview from 4 pm to 6 pm

  End of Season Miscellany December 5, 2007 Hopefully, by now, almost all of you have your picture packet and have returned your uniforms. If you still need to pick up pictures or give back a uniform, check with your coach! We also have some pictures from the Fall 2007 posted here and here (thanks to our helpful photographers!). We have the team photos on a separate page. We hope to see everyone again in the spring!

  Picture News! November 16, 2007 No, we haven't forgotten about those picture packages from October! We expect the packages to arrive by Monday, November 26. Please contact your coach if you haven't heard anything after that date. Also, we are still trying to collect the last few uniforms, so if you still have one, please return it to Angie Mutter at Riverview or Chris King at the ASL Library before the end of this month.

  Game Schedule for Saturday, October 27 October 25, 2007 This is the game schedule for Saturday, October 27. These should be our last games before our winter break. Contact your coach for information about returning your uniforms (the easiest option is to bring a change of clothes for after the game).   Picture Packages October 17, 2007 We apologize for not having a handout at the Monday/Tuesday games detailing the photo package that we're offering this season. For $15, you get one 5x7, one 4x6, and four wallet-size pictures of your child, plus a team photo (5x7).   Game Schedule, Saturday, September 22 September 21, 2007 There have been no games scheduled for this weekend. As always, check with your coach to be sure. (Of course, that leaves players and parents able to watch the US v England Women's World Cup match on ESPN2 at 8 am!) We hope to have several teams playing games next Saturday.

  No Riverview Practices September 17-19 September 14, 2007 Due to the One Life of Virginia program being held at the school, there will be no practices at Riverview Elementary/Middle School from Monday, September 17 through Wednesday, September 19. Coaches may choose to have practices at alternate locations; other coaches have canceled their practices. Always check with your coach to be sure!

  Soccer Season Kickoff on Thursday, September 6! August 30, 2007 The Buchanan County Soccer Association will be kicking off the 2007-2008 season with a big "Soccerfest" on Thursday, September 6, at 5 pm at Riverview Elementary/Middle School. Children between the ages of 3½ to 18 are welcome to register for the season ($25 for new players, $15 for returning; there's a $5 discount for more than one child in a family). Children should come ready to play (shin guards are recommended for all returning players). In the event of rain, we'll play indoors. We hope to begin playing games on Saturday, September 15, and continue playing through the end of October.

  End of Season Notes June 11, 2007 Thanks to all the parents and kids who came to the picnic on Saturday! We managed to get in a great meal and several games without worrying about rain. If you didn't make it to the picnic, you can pick up player awards at Mutter Insurance. Please be sure you've returned your uniform (if you haven't, you can drop it off in a bag labeled with the player's name(s) when you pick up the medal(s)). Thanks again to all for a great season! See you in the fall!

  Picnic Update! (Saturday, June 9) June 7, 2007 Due to a conflict in scheduling, BCSA will be moving the End-of-Season Picnic to Riverview Elementary/Middle School. We'll start eating around 11 am, and we might play some parent-children games afterwards. Please bring your washed uniform in a labeled bag to the picnic. Relatives and non-playing siblings are invited to our picnic, but must pay $2.00/person to eat. Each team must bring canned drinks (no 2-liter bottles, please - we don't have cups!) for all their players, as well as a dessert or two and a side dish. There's a chance of rain, so feel free to bring umbrellas and pop-up tents! Thanks to all for a great season! See you in the fall!

  2007 Spring Season Coming Soon! April 10, 2007 BCSA's first games of the 2007 Spring season will take place at Poplar Gap Park very soon. (We posted yesterday that games might begin this weekend, but we've been told there may be a schedule change.) Coaches should be contacting all players this week (if they haven't already), and when schedules are released we'll post them here.

  New BCSA Web Site Design! April 9, 2007 With the start of a new soccer season just around the corner, we've made a few updates to the web site. There were a few pages that weren't getting updated, so we've removed them, in an effort to simplify finding information. If there's something missing, let Chris know.

  High School Soccer Team Organizational Meeting January 18, 2007 Soccer players in grades 8 through 12 are encouraged to compete on our new high school soccer team! There will be a sign-up meeting at Riverview Elementary-Middle School on Tuesday, January 23, 2007, at 7 pm in the Forum. This will be the only scheduled sign-up to form the team. Students must be enrolled full-time in school, and must pass a physical examination before attending tryouts. The new high school team may play against Richlands, Graham, Tazewell, Abingdon, Marion, and Carroll County.

  BCSA's First Soccer Tournament A Success! October 31, 2006 The Mountain Mission School's Little Brazilians soccer team claimed first place at the Mountain Invitational Soccer Tournament held Saturday, October 21, at Poplar Gap Park. The Little Brazilians won the title by virtue of a 2-1 victory over the BCSA Titans in the finals. The Little Brazilians reached the finals by winning the first semifinal of the day against the MMS Knights. The Little Brazilians jumped out to a first half lead on the basis of several early goals. The Knights rallied in the second half, scoring two unanswered goals, but were unable to overcome the early deficit. The second semifinal saw the BCSA Titans face off against the MMS Tigers, the only team to defeat the Titans in the regular season. The game was very evenly matched with the Tigers coming from behind twice to tie the score before finally losing to the Titans 3-2. In the third place game, the Tigers were able to put their semifinal loss behind them and defeated the Knights soundly to claim third place in the tournament. The final between the Little Brazilians and the Titans was a tight and tense affair. The two evenly matched teams had played once in the regular season with that match ending in a tie. In the final, the two teams exchanged goals before the Little Brazilians scored a second. As the second half passed, the Titans applied more and more attacking pressure in an attempt to tie the score before time expired. Several Titans shots narrowly missed the Little Brazilians’ goal, but the Little Brazilians were able to withstand the pressure and claimed a 2-1 victory. Attacker Chris Baez and defender Ricky Fernandez, both of the Little Brazilians, were voted Co-MVP’s of the tournament by the participating coaches. -- Thanks to Scott Boone for the write-up (which also appeared in the Virginia Mountaineer) and to Mark Mutter for the pictures of the tournament.

  BCSA Ends Fall 2006 Season! October 18, 2006 The BCSA will wrap up the Fall 2006 season with a single-elimination tournament this Saturday, October 21, at Poplar Gap Park. The U12 and U14 teams will try to outlast each other for a chance to be soccer champion of Buchanan County. Games start at 10 am. Contact Coach Boone for more details. We've also posted 2006 team pictures on the web site. Click on the mini-pictures for a larger version. Thanks to Photo Classics in Vansant for the great shots! (And we also noticed that we never posted the 2005 team pictures until now, but that has been fixed!)

  Season-Ending Games Saturday, October 14! October 10, 2006 We're planning a big Soccerfest to end the Fall 2006 season! All games will be at Poplar Gap Park. All teams except for Boone and Mountain Mission should bring their uniform in a bag (with the player's name on the bag). We will divide players into different teams for this week's games. Following the games, we will play a parent/child game. We will also have a bring-your-own-lunch picnic.

  U-6 Games/Practices Saturday October 3, 2006 All U-6 teams will play on Saturday this week (there will not be any games on Tuesday, October 5). The Green Dragons (Fields) face the Purple Tigers (Fields) at 10 am on Saturday at Poplar Gap, and the Red Rockets (Mutter) will play the Dreamsicles (Belcher) at 11 am. These will be the last games for the U-6 teams until April.

  Soccer T-Shirts For Sale! October 2, 2006 The popular soccer T-shirts will again be sold this Saturday near the concession stand. There will be two styles available from Traditional Screen Printing. A long-sleeve T-shirt is $12, while a short-sleeve T-shirt is $8. Sweatshirts are $15 for Youth Small through Adult XL, $17 for 2XL, and $18 for 3XL. BCSA thanks Nora Cantrell for these special soccer prices.

  Don't Forget About Pictures! October 2, 2006 Most individual player photos and the player/team package photos are ready to be picked up! Call Heather at Photo Classics at 935-5177 to make sure your order is ready and to arrange a time to pick them up. (Any orders placed this past Saturday will take one more week to process.) BCSA thanks Photo Classics for the great photography. We'll be posting those team pictures on the web site before the season ends.

  Game Schedule - Tuesday, October 3 October 2, 2006 U-10 Blue will play U-10 Green (formerly Yellow!) in a make-up game at Poplar Gap Park at 5:30 pm this Tuesday. The Green Team should return their yellow/blue jerseys and the two pairs of socks.

  2006-2007 Registration August 29, 2006 The Buchanan County Soccer Association will have a "new players" registration on Thursday, August 31, from 6 to 7:30 pm at Poplar Gap Park. There is a $25 registration fee which includes uniform rental (we offer discounts for multiple children in the family).

  Summer Soccer Camp! August 3, 2006 BCSA's annual summer soccer camp will be held at Poplar Gap Park from August 14 through 18. Players ages 4 through 7 (as of August 1) will have camp on Monday and Tuesday, from 6 pm to 7 pm each night. Players aged 8 and 9 will meet Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 6 pm to 7 pm on those three nights. All older players will meet all week, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The camp is $5 per player, but that fee is waived if you sign them up for the full season! Contact Jennifer Potter with questions, or just come up to the Park to register on Monday or Wednesday nights. (Players should bring shinguards, water, and, if possible, a soccer ball.)

  World Cup TV Schedule May 24, 2006 The biggest sporting event in the World -- soccer's World Cup -- will be taking place this summer, and we encourage all our players (and parents too) to watch a few games. The complete television schedule (the games will be carried by ABC Sports, ESPN, and ESPN2) can be found at the Major League Soccer web site (which also televises many of its own series of games.

  BCSA Kicks Off 2005-2006 Soccer Season! September 23, 2005 It's time to play some soccer! The first games of the 2005-2006 season will be played this weekend. The U-6 games will be played at Poplar Gap Park on Friday, September 23, starting at 6 pm. On Saturday, we have a full day of games at the park. BCSA's U-12 teams (Mutter and Barbetto) will play against Richlands U-12 at 10 am on Field 3. BCSA's U-14 team (Boone) plays Richlands U-14 at 11 am on Field 4. The U-8 team (Gonzalez) will have a soccerfest at noon on half of the football field. U-10 Daniels plays U-10 King at noon on Field 3.   Wet Weather Cancels Most Saturday/Sunday Games September 9, 2004 Due to the after-effects of Hurricane Francis, we have opted not to play most BCSA soccer games on the weekend of September 11th and 12th. The Under-6 teams will play their first games this weekend, so check with your coach for a schedule.

  BCSA First Game Schedule: August 28! August 27, 2004 Here is the schedule for the games on Saturday, August 28; all games will be played at Poplar Gap Park. In the Under-6 division, playing on Field 1 (5 minute quarters), Team 1 (coached by Coach Fields) will play Team 2 (coach to be announced) at 10 am. In the Under-8 division (playing 8 minute quarters), Team Mutter will play against Team Baker at 10:30. Then Team Belcher plays Team Mutter at 11:15. Both games will be played on Field 2 (next to the concession stand). In the Under-10 division (10 minute quarters), Team King will play against Team Barbetto at 10 am. Then Team Roark will play against Team 4 at 11 am. Both games will be played on Field 3 (closest to the stairs). In the Under-12 division, Coach Boone will divide the teams up on Field 4 at 10 am, and play for 10 minute quarters. In the Under-18 division, Coach Boone will also divide the teams on Field 4 at 11 am, and play for 10 minute quarters. If you have questions, please contact your coach as soon as possible!

  BCSA Fall Season Begins: August 28! August 25, 2004 Rosters are finalized, uniforms are being handed out, players are starting to practice -- BCSA is ready to kick off its Fall 2004 season on Saturday, August 28! Coaches should be contacting players during the week of August 23, and hopefully getting in at least one practice before the first game day. If your child hasn't heard from a coach before Thursday, please contact Angie Mutter immediately!

  BCSA Referee Training: Aug. 29! August 20, 2004 If you would like to be a referee for our upcoming fall season, please contact John Fields to sign up for training. We have set our training class for Sunday, August 29, from 2 to 5 pm at the Appalachian School of Law (Lower Level Classroom).

  BCSA Fall Season Registration: Aug. 19! August 18, 2004 Make sure you are at Riverview Elementary School from 5 pm to 6:30 pm on Thursday, August 19 (first day of school for county residents) to sign up for a full season of BCSA soccer! We will need parents to be ready to sign their children up for $25, which includes a full season (Fall 2004 and Spring 2005), insurance, and rental of a soccer uniform (shirt and socks).   Virginia Mountaineer Profiles BCSA November 7, 2003 The Virginia Mountaineer, Buchanan County's weekly newspaper, had a special two-page spread about BCSA in their Thursday, November 6, edition. All the team pictures were published with some details about the upcoming Spring 2004 season.

  BCSA Upcoming Events October 22, 2003 The BCSA/AYSO Board of Directors voted unanimously to hold the Spring 2004 season beginning March 27 and ending April 24. No games will be played on Easter weekend. Registration nights will be held at the end of February in area schools. Contact Angie Mutter (935-5204) for more information. A Fall 2004 season is also being planned; watch this web site for details. Margaret Roark has accepted the position of Soccer Camp Coordinator, and will be working with ProExcel to provide a top-rated camp this summer. Camp will likely run August 2 through 6, 2004 at Poplar Gap Park. More details about the camp will be announced during the Spring 2004 season.   Soccer Float in Grundy Homecoming Parade October 22, 2003 The U-10 Sunfire team, coached by Cathy Ratliff, entered the recent homecoming parade in Grundy. They covered their vehicle with soccer and football magnets, wore their yellow game jerseys, and gave out lots of candy to the crowds. Other teams should keep in mind that the Grundy Christmas parade is coming up!

  BCSA Board Meeting October 12, 2003 The last BCSA Board Meeting of 2003 will be on October 15 at 5:00 pm at the Mutter's house on Hill Street. There are several Board positions open, so please join us!

  More Games! October 5, 2003 There are still a few makeup games to be played. The Titans-Knights game will be held on Tuesday, October 7, at 6 pm at Poplar Gap. Please contact your coach if you still have a makeup game. Our Under-12 teams will travel outside the county to play Richlands in a game on Wednesday, October 8, at 5:30 pm. The game will be played at Southwest Virginia Community College on the soccer field in back of the school. Fifteen of our kids (dressed in gold jerseys) will play Richlands in a Southwest District rivalry. We'll post pictures when we get them developed. Good luck, BCSA!

  Schedule Changes for October 4 September 29, 2003 The Avengers-Blue Blaze game on October 4 will be at 11 am. The Titans-Knights game on October 4 will be rescheduled. We will post the day and time of the rescheduled game soon.

  Family Picnic: October 5 September 22, 2003 BCSA's end-of-year Family Picnic and Awards Day will be held on Sunday, October 5, from 2 - 4 pm at Poplar Gap. Please contact your coach so we will have enough food for all who attend!

Our annual Team Picture Day will be held on Saturday, September 20. These pictures will go to the newspaper, on the website, and to our Team Sponsors, so please make sure your child is present, even if you're not planning on purchasing pictures.

  Referee Training: September 13 September 6, 2003

Training for new referees is Saturday, September 13, at 8:30 am at Grundy United Methodist Church on Walnut Street. Please make a reservation to ensure we have enough materials for all participants. Call Angie at 935-5204 or Brian at 597-8512. This training covers all the rules of soccer, so join us even if you've never played before!
